Singapore to Auction Remaining 3G Spectrum

SINGAPORE–The country may see a fourth 3G telco in the market by the end of the year, following the government’s decision to auction unused 3G spectrum. Local ICT regulator, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), in March called for public consultation on its plans to put up for sale three lots of spectrum left unutilized after the country’s 3G auction in 2001 ended with only three winning bids, instead of the targeted four.

THE Government will go ahead with a proposed auction of unused frequency, over the objections of the three telcos. In an eight-page decision paper issued last week, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) said that it will hold an auction of three lots of 3G spectrum by October.

MANILA, Philippines – Globe Telecom Inc., the country’s second largest telecommunicationas company, said regulators have approved its petition to operate its $40-million cable landing station in Cagayan province. The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) granted Globe Telecom a certificate of public convenience and necessity (CPCN) to operate and maintain an international cable landing station in Ballesteros, Cagayan.

Very recently the company announced plans for the launch of virtual hosting services clubbed under Global Virtualization Services (GVS) for the Singapore markets. Singapore now joins the club of GVS data centers in places like London, Hong Kong, Sterling and San Jose.
